Why is Outdoor Cooling Important?

Outdoor cooling is crucial for enhancing comfort, increasing productivity, and ensuring customer satisfaction. Here’s why it matters:

1. Comfort for People and Animals

Outdoor cooling systems provide relief from extreme heat, making spaces more enjoyable.

For animals, cooling minimizes the risk of heat stress and improves health and productivity.

2. Compliance with Regulations

Smoking areas, for example, must be outdoors due to regulations. Effective cooling ensures these spaces remain comfortable for guests.

3. Health and Safety

Outdoor sports, events, and schoolyards require cooling to prevent heat stress, especially for vulnerable groups like children and the elderly.

Challenges of Outdoor Cooling

Outdoor cooling is more complex than indoor cooling due to several factors:

1. Thermal Convection

Cold air mixes with surrounding hot air, reducing its effectiveness over short distances.

2. Air Flow Loss

Natural wind interference and sun radiation disrupt airflow.

3. High Energy Consumption

Continuous operation of cooling systems leads to massive power consumption.

4. Dust and Condensation

High-velocity systems can raise dust, and outdoor ducts may face condensation issues.

5. Inefficient Air Exchange

Traditional Air Changes per Hour (ACH) calculations don’t apply to outdoor environments.

Outdoor Cooling Solutions

Here are some effective solutions for outdoor cooling:

1. Dry Fans

Low-cost and effective for mild climates.

Increases wind-chill effect and sweat evaporation.

Tip: Use IP-rated fans for outdoor durability.

2. Chilled Water Systems

Ideal for large areas.

Can be connected to local chillers or district cooling systems.

3. Portable or Packaged Air-Conditioning Units

Industrial-grade units with high BTU and airflow are recommended.

4. Evaporative Cooling Systems

Best for hot climates due to low power consumption.

Types: Direct (DEC), Indirect (IEC), and Indirect-Direct (IDEC).

5. Misting Systems and Wet Fans

High-pressure misting systems create fine water droplets for quick evaporation.

Wet fans combine misting with airflow for enhanced cooling.

6. Hybrid Systems

Combine multiple solutions for maximum efficiency.

Examples: Chilled water misting, DX with evaporative coolers.

Outdoor Cooling Design Concepts

To achieve efficient outdoor cooling, consider the following design principles:

1. Direct Air Stream

Align air streams to reach the target area for maximum comfort.

2. High Velocity Airflow

Higher velocity ensures cold air travels further and provides a wind-chill effect.

3. Wind Barriers and Sun Shades

Wind barriers reduce hot air interference.

Sun shades block direct radiation and help contain cold air.

4. Minimize Distance

Reduce the travel distance of cold air to minimize thermal convection.

5. Smart Automation

Use sensors, dampers, and louvers to control cooling zones efficiently.

6. Insulation

Proper insulation improves system performance and energy efficiency.

Typical data center mechanical systems usually do not use evaporative cooling , traditional air conditioning system used to cool the server room with a central chilled water plant and cooling towers.

Facebook good data center design is all about efficiency and how efficiently they use energy, materials, and water, and how they tie together to bring about cost efficiency. they previously shared information on energy and materials efficiency, and today they release the first water usage effectiveness measurements and information on how they achieved what we think is a strong level of efficiency in water use for cooling .

The system design for this data center is straight forward. The misting system placed to cool down supply air stream that will be fed into the main data-center hall. It basically replaces the evaporative cooling Media. with High pressure misting system (fans, high pressure pumps, nozzles, filters) . the cooling effect is result of misting system evaporative cooling effect.

Advantages: Low-cost, easy to maintain, hug amount of air flow, very low power consumption

Disadvantages: very poor performance in humid climate

Theoretical efficiency: 90%

Practical Efficiency 75-85%

Indirect evaporative coolers (IEC)

How it works: first stream of air passing throw wet media cooling down the water, second stream (supply air) will be pre-cooled with indirect ouch with the cold water (or heat exchanger)

Advantages: little tricky maintain, no humidity added to supply air

Disadvantages: very poor performance in humid climate, less efficient than direct evaporative coolers

Theoretical efficiency: 70%

Practical Efficiency 50-60%

*Coolerado Claims Efficiency of 110% using Mass heat exchanger technology

Indirect-direct evaporative coolers (IDEC)

How it works: first stream of air passing throw wet media cooling down the water, second stream (supply air) will be pre-cooled with indirect touch with the cold water (or heat exchanger) then it will pass throw the second stage evaporative media

Advantages: very high efficiency, good performance in humid climate

Disadvantages: little tricky to maintain, smaller amount of air flow, expensive.

Theoretical efficiency: 135%

practical Efficiency 112-127%

Hybrid evaporative coolers:

How it works: Main stream of air passing throw wet evaporative media then via DX (or chilled water coil)

Advantages: ability to control the supply air temperature

Disadvantages: power consumption is higher, but still much less than traditional compressor based systems

2. Fan and pad systems:

How it works: widely applied in poultry and green houses , evaporative media will be installed on one side of the greenhouse and fans on the opposite side, this fans will generate suction pressure sucking air via the wet pads

Advantages: Low-cost, easy to maintain, hug amount of air flow, very low power consumption

Disadvantages: very poor performance in humid climate

Theoretical efficiency: 80%

Practical Efficiency 60-70%

3. High pressure Misting system (water fog/fogging system) :

It’s another type of evaporative cooling, the system is based on very high pressure 70 bar water pump (while normal water tap pressure is 3 bar max) spraying water via very small orifice nozzles (0.1-0.3MM)

this will produce very fine drops of water (5-15 micron) it will look like fog and evaporate very fast while traveling in air at distance of 1-2 meters max

Advantages: very high efficiency almost achieving the wet-bulb temp

Disadvantages: very expensive, nozzles get blocked easily, need very clean treated water.

Note: some systems on the internet valuable for couple of hindered of dollars promoted as “high pressure misting system” most of them have pressure less than 5-10 bar, they will just spray water and get everything wet , high pressure misting systems with just 10-15 nozzles prices start with minimum 1500$ +

Water pressure 50-70 bar

Theoretical efficiency: 100%*

Practical Efficiency 85-95%*

*Based on system sprays 5 milliliter of water mist for every cubic meter of air

*Water pressure 60 Bar

*nozzle orifice 0.25mm

Cooling towers:

Theoretical efficiency: 80%

Real life Efficiency 50-60%
